PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DES MOINES IA
1041 AM CDT MON JUL 01 2013

...2013 VERSUS 2012 PRECIPITATION TOTALS FOR THE NWS DES MOINES
FORECAST AREA...

THE FOLLOWING ARE PRECIPITATION AMOUNTS FOR THE FIRST 181 DAYS...OR
THROUGH JUNE 30...OF 2013...COMPARED WITH PRECIPITATION TOTALS OF
ALL OF 2012. THERE ARE 48 COUNTIES ACROSS THE DES MOINES FORECAST
AREA REPRESENTED BELOW. WITH 2013 ALMOST HALFWAY COMPLETE...25 OF
THOSE 48 COUNTIES...HAVE ALREADY EXCEEDED THEIR 2012 PRECIPITATION.

TO BRING SOME PERSPECTIVE...DES MOINES AVERAGES ABOUT 16 INCHES OF
PRECIPITATION FROM NOW THROUGH THE REST OF THE YEAR. IF DES MOINES
RECEIVES THAT 16 INCH AVERAGE...THE AREA WOULD END UP WITH OVER ONE
FOOT MORE OF PRECIPITATION IN 2013 THAN IN 2012. IF WATERLOO
RECEIVES THEIR AVERAGE OF ABOUT 17 INCHES FOR THE REST OF THE
YEAR...THEY WOULD EXCEED THEIR 2012 PRECIPITATION BY ALMOST TWO
FEET.

LAST YEAR AT THIS TIME...DES MOINES HAD 15.15 INCHES OF
PRECIPITATION.

THERE MAY BE LOCATIONS WITHIN A COUNTY THAT HAVE RECEIVED MORE
RAINFALL IN 2013 THAN 2012 WHICH ARE NOT ACCOUNTED FOR ON THE LIST
BELOW. THE VALUES BELOW ARE MEASURED BY NWS COOPERATIVE OBSERVERS
AND AUTOMATED SYSTEMS. ALL OF THESE MEASUREMENTS ARE PRELIMINARY AND
UNOFFICIAL.
