...INCREASED POTENTIAL FOR LANDSLIDE ACTIVITY...

VERY HEAVY RAINFALL ASSOCIATED WITH HURRICANE FLORENCE IS
EXPECTED TO RESULT IN INCREASING LANDSLIDE ACTIVITY IN THE
MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN OF NORTHWESTERN NORTH CAROLINA AND
SOUTHWESTERN VIRGINIA LATE SATURDAY INTO MONDAY. RAINFALL TOTALS
IN THIS AREA ARE EXPECTED TO RANGE FROM 6 TO 10 INCHES, WITH
LOCALIZED AMOUNTS APPROACHING OR EXCEEDING ONE FOOT.

LANDSLIDES...WHICH CAN INCLUDE FAST-MOVING DEBRIS FLOWS
CONSISTING OF WATER,MUD,FALLING ROCKS,TREES, AND OTHER LARGE
DEBRIS, ARE MOST LIKELY ON STEEP SLOPES AND WITHIN SMALL VALLEYS
THAT DRAIN STEEP SLOPES. LANDSLIDES ARE POWERFUL AND POTENTIALLY
DEADLY CAPABLE OF WASHING OUT ROADS,BRIDGES, AND HOMES. PEOPLE
LIVING IN AREAS PRONE TO LANDSLIDES SHOULD BE AWARE OF THE DANGER
AND BE PREPARED TO ACT.

FLASH FLOOD WATCHES HAVE ALREADY BEEN POSTED FOR THE MOUNTAINS OF
NORTHWEST NORTH CAROLINA AND SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA, AND THESE
HEADLINES WILL LIKELY BE EXPANDED AS THE STORM APPROACHES. FLASH
FLOOD WARNINGS WILL LIKELY BE RELEASED THIS WEEKEND WHEN
WIDESPREAD HEAVY RAINS BEGIN.

HERE ARE RECOMMENDED ACTIONS TO CONSIDER BOTH AHEAD OF THE STORM
AND WHEN IT BEGINS.

BEFORE THE STORM...

1. IF YOU LIVE IN A LOCATION PRONE TO LANDSLIDES, CONSIDER
HEADING TO A SAFER LOCATION BEFORE THE HEAVY RAIN BEGINS. MOVE TO
HIGHER GROUND AWAY FROM STREAMS AND RIVERS. ALSO AVOID STEEP
SLOPES OR NEAR THE BASE OF STEEP SLOPES. IDENTIFY A STURDY SHELTER
ON HIGHER GROUND SUCH AS A WELL-BUILT HOME, CHURCH OR SCHOOL.

2. STOCK UP ON NON PERISHABLE FOOD AND WATER TO SUSTAIN YOU AND
YOUR FAMILY FOR UP TO THREE DAYS OR LONGER. ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE
IMPORTANT PAPERS SUCH AS INSURANCE AND IDENTIFICATION, FIRST AID
KIT, SUPPLY OF PRESCRIPTION MEDICINES AND OTHER SPECIALTY ITEMS
IN YOUR PREPAREDNESS KIT. IN ADDITION, PLAN TO HAVE AN EMERGENCY
KIT IN YOUR CAR IN CASE YOU NEED TO EVACUATE. WHILE CREATING AN
EMERGENCY KIT, PET OWNERS SHOULD REMEMBER TO PACK THE NECESSARY
ITEMS FOR THEIR PETS.

3. MAKE SURE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY HAVE CONTACT NUMBERS FOR EACH
OTHER SO THAT YOU CAN MAINTAIN COMMUNICATION IN THE EVENT OF AN
EMERGENCY.

4. IF POWER FAILS, USE FLASHLIGHTS RATHER THAN CANDLES. DO NOT
BRING GENERATORS INTO THE HOME. DO NOT USE CAMP STOVES OR LANTERNS
IN THE HOME WITHOUT PROPER VENTILATION. CANDLES AND BURNING
DEVICES PRODUCE CARBON MONOXIDE THAT CAN SILENTLY KILL DUE TO A
SLOW BUILDUP OF AN INVISIBLE AND DEADLY GAS THAT CAN NOT BE
SMELLED.

5. KEEP YOUR CAR FULLY FUELED. IF ELECTRIC POWER IS LOST, GAS
STATIONS MAY NOT BE ABLE TO DISPENSE FUELS UNTIL POWER IS
RESTORED.

6. STAY ALERT SHOULD WARNINGS BE ISSUED AND THE THREAT BECOMES
IMMINENT. MONITOR NOAA WEATHER RADIO OR LOCAL MEDIA FOR POSSIBLE
FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS.

DURING THE STORM:

1. AVOID DRIVING NEAR STEEP SLOPES OR CROSSING STREAM VALLEYS.
NEVER TRY TO DRIVE ACROSS A FLOODED ROAD. POTENTIAL HAZARDS TO
DRIVERS INCLUDE WASHED-OUT ROADS, BRIDGES, AND FALLING OR FLOWING
LARGE DEBRIS.

2. IMMEDIATELY MOVE AWAY FROM STEEP SLOPES AND SMALL STREAMS IN
STEEP VALLEYS. SEEK REFUGE ON HIGHER GROUND AWAY FROM STREAMS,
PREFERABLY IN A STURDY SHELTER.

3. STAY ALERT. MANY LANDSLIDE FATALITIES OCCUR WHEN PEOPLE ARE
SLEEPING. BE AWARE THAT SHORT INTENSE BURSTS OF RAINFALL ARE
PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS.

4. KEEP TUNED TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO OR LOCAL MEDIA FOR THE LATEST
WARNINGS AND STATEMENTS REGARDING THIS DANGEROUS WEATHER EVENT.
