SPECIAL AVALANCHE BULLETIN 
CHUGACH NATIONAL FOREST AVALANCHE INFORMATION CENTER

THE CHUGACH NATIONAL FOREST AVALANCHE CENTER IN GIRDWOOD AK HAS 
ISSUED A SPECIAL AVALANCHE BULLETIN. 

* TIMING - IN EFFECT FROM 6 A.M. SATURDAY JANUARY 26, TO 6 P.M. 
  SUNDAY JANUARY 27, 2019. 

* AFFECTED AREA - TURNAGAIN PASS AND THE KENAI AND WESTERN CHUGACH
  MOUNTAINS IN AND AROUND EASTERN TURNAGAIN ARM. 

* AVALANCHE DANGER - AVALANCHE DANGER WILL BE CONSIDERABLE THROUGH
  THE WEEKEND DUE TO 2 TO 5 PLUS FEET OF SNOW THAT HAS FALLEN ON 
  AN UNSTABLE BASE. DESPITE IMPROVING WEATHER, HUMAN TRIGGERED 
  LARGE AVALANCHES WILL REMAIN LIKELY ON SLOPES STEEPER THAN 30 
  DEGREES AT ELEVATIONS ABOVE 1,500. 

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTION - CHOOSE TERRAIN THAT IS FLAT 
OR LESS THAN 30 DEGREES IN STEEPNESS, WITH NOTHING STEEPER ABOVE,
FOR A SAFE WEEKEND. CAREFUL SNOWPACK EVALUATION, CAUTIOUS ROUTE-
FINDING AND CONSERVATIVE DECISION MAKING SKILLS WILL BE NECESSARY 
TO IDENTIFY AND AVOID UNSTABLE SLOPES. 

SIMILAR AVALANCHE DANGER MAY EXIST AT LOCATIONS OUTSIDE THE
COVERAGE AREA OF ANY AVALANCHE CENTER. CHECK WWW.AVALANCHE.ORG
