...SUMMARY...

RADAR DATA FROM KLWX IN STERLING, VIRGINIA, COUPLED WITH AERIAL
PHOTOS AND PHOTOS FROM THE GROUND, REVEALED THAT A BRIEF EF-0
TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN IN THE ROCKING LANE AREA OF TIMBERVILLE IN
ROCKINGHAM COUNTY VIRGINIA IN THE EVENING OF OCTOBER 31, 2019.

A SMALL LINE SEGMENT OF THUNDERSTORMS MOVED ACROSS NORTH-CENTRAL
ROCKINGHAM COUNTY AROUND 6:00 PM EDT ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2019.
MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC REPORTED DAMAGE ON HENKEL LANE, AND WHEN
NEARBY BROADCAST MEDIA ARRIVED ON SCENE, THEIR DRONE PHOTOS NOTED A
SMALL BUT DISTINCT NARROW PATH OF DAMAGE.

THE TORNADO APPEARED TO BEGIN IN A CORN FIELD ON A PROPERTY ON THE
SOUTHWEST SIDE OF HENKEL LANE, WHERE CORN STALKS WERE FLATTENED IN A
NARROW, MEANDERING PATH, OVER AN AREA ABOUT 25 YARDS WIDE. AS THIS
PATH MEANDERED NORTHEASTWARD, IT CROSSED A GROVE OF HEALTHY TREES,
MOST OF WHICH HAD SUBSTANTIAL NUMBERS OF THEIR LARGE TOP BRANCHES
SNAPPED OFF. IT THEN PROCEEDED ACROSS AN OLD BARN WHICH WAS
DESTROYED. A 2 BY 6 PIECE OF LUMBER FROM THE BARN IMPALED THE
WINDSHIELD OF A NEARBY SUV, WHOSE HOOD WAS ALSO PEELED BACK FROM THE
WIND.

DAMAGE CONTINUED ACROSS A CORN FIELD ON THE NORTHEAST SIDE OF HENKEL
LANE. A SMALL SHED WAS DESTROYED ON A PROPERTY JUST SOUTH OF
VA-211 NEW MARKET ROAD. HERE A SMALL TREE WAS UPROOTED, AND
SEVERAL BRANCHES WERE DOWNED ACROSS THE ROADWAY. NO FURTHER DAMAGE
WAS NOTED NORTH OF VA-211 NEW MARKET ROAD, ALTHOUGH SCATTERED
TREE LIMB DAMAGE WAS NOTED FROM STRAIGHT LINE WINDS ASSOCIATED
WITH THE DOWNDRAFT OF THE SQUALL LINE FURTHER WEST ON VA-211 NEW
MARKET ROAD TO ABOUT PLAINS MILL ROAD.

IN ADDITION, SEVERAL LARGE TREES WERE DOWNED ALONG BIRDVIEW LANE,
ALL FACING THE SAME DIRECTION ABOUT A MILE AND A HALF TO THE
SOUTHWEST OF THE CONFIRMED TORNADO PATH. THIS SURGE OF LOCALIZED
STRAIGHT LINE DOWNDRAFT WINDS MAY HAVE ENHANCED LOW-LEVEL
ENVIRONMENTAL SPIN, RESULTING IN THE BRIEF TORNADO FORMING A
COUPLE MINUTES LATER TO THE NORTHEAST ON HENKEL LANE.

THE NWS WOULD LIKE TO THANK WHSV FOR ASSISTANCE WITH THIS ANALYSIS.
