...PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE IN PHOENIX, ARIZONA, IS AWARE
OF DATA QUALITY ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH THE PHOENIX (KIWA) DOPPLER
RADAR. EXCESSIVE DAYTIME TEMPERATURES WITHIN THE RADAR SHELTER
ARE CAUSING ERRONEOUSLY HIGH REFLECTIVITY VALUES. REFLECTIVITY
DATA DO NOT APPEAR TO BE IMPACTED OUTSIDE OF PEAK DAYTIME HEATING
HOURS AND VELOCITY DATA APPEAR TO BE UNIMPACTED AT ALL HOURS.
ALTHOUGH THE REFLECTIVITY VALUES ARE ERRONEOUS, THE DEPICTED
PATTERNS ARE STILL USEFUL TO NWS METEOROLOGISTS. THEREFORE, THE
DECISION HAS BEEN MADE TO ALLOW THE RADAR TO CONTINUE OPERATING.
TECHNICIANS CONTINUE TO TROUBLESHOOT THE ISSUE, BUT A FULL REPAIR
OF THE RADAR IS NOT EXPECTED UNTIL AT LEAST WEDNESDAY. USERS ARE
ENCOURAGED TO USE THE NEARBY FLAGSTAFF (KFSX) AND TUCSON (KEMX)
RADARS DURING THIS TIME.
