...NWS DAMAGE SURVEY FOR MAY 6TH 2022 TORNADO EVENT...

A NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SURVEY TEAM INSPECTED STORM DAMAGE NEAR
THE COMMUNITY OF WENTWORTH, NORTH CAROLINA AND CONCLUDED THE DAMAGE
WAS CAUSED BY A TORNADO OF EF1 INTENSITY ON THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE,
WITH MAXIMUM WIND GUSTS OF 110 MPH. THE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN IN A
WOODED AREA JUST SOUTHWEST OF SUNSET VIEW ROAD AND PROCEEDED NORTHEAST,
PRODUCING DISCONTINUOUS DAMAGE ALONG ITS PATH, BEFORE LIFTING NEAR THE
INTERSECTION OF CRUTCHFIELD ROAD AND U.S. HIGHWAY 29 BUSINESS.
THE MAJORITY OF DIRECT DAMAGE CONSISTED OF NUMEROUS MATURE TREES EITHER
SNAPPED OR UPROOTED, ALTHOUGH SEVERAL HOMES SUSTAINED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE
DUE TO THE TREES FALLING ON THEM. ONE BARN SUSTAINED MINOR DAMAGE DUE
TO ROOFING MATERIAL BEING BLOWN OFF BY THE STORM. THE LENGTH OF THE
TORNADO TRACK WAS ESTIMATED TO BE 7.9 MILES, AND THE MAXIMUM WIDTH
WAS APPROXIMATELY 300 YARDS.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN BLACKSBURG WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND
ITS SINCERE GRATITUDE TO THE ROCKINGHAM COUNTY EMERGENCY SERVICES
